Here is a quick summary of my YouTube class "GREETINGS IN ITALIAN " and "PRONTO??!! HOW TO ANSWER THE PHONE IN ITALIAN AND A FEW MORE THINGS"
CIAO = Hi/Bye (informal greeting)
SALVE = Hello (formal greeting) ---> DON'T USE THIS WORD TO ANSWER THE PHONE!!
ARRIVEDERCI = Bye/Good bye (formal greeting)
BUONGIORNO or BUON GIORNO (it can also be spelled as 2 words) = Good Morning
BUON POMERIGGIO = Good Afternoon
BUONASERA or BUONA SERA (it can also be spelled as 2 words) = Good Evening
BUONANOTTE or BUONA NOTTE (it can also be spelled as 2 words) = Good Night
CI VEDIAMO = See you! (informal/formal) A PRESTO = See you soon/ talk to you soon (informal/formal)
BUONA GIORNATA = have a good day/enjoy your day
BUONA SERATA = have a good night/ enjoy your night
COME STAI? = how are you? COME STA? = how are you (formal form)
PS: None of these greetings can be used to answer the phone!!! The right word to answer the phone is "PRONTO".
